Boston Acoustics Delivers the Definitive Reference Component Speakers

CES 2007, Las Vegas, Nevada—Boston Acoustics, Inc., leading maker of high-performance audio systems for aftermarket and OEM automotive audio as well as music, A/V, and custom systems for the home, has unveiled the ultimate successor to the acclaimed “Z-Series” automotive component speakers. Launching at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, Boston’s new SPZ-Series Reference Component Speakers set the standard for performance, sound quality, and ease of installation.

“Our Z components have long been a widely accepted reference for loudspeaker performance among serious mobile sound enthusiasts,” says Leif Blackmon, Boston’s Director of Mobile Audio. “With SPZ, we are providing a best-in-class audio solution without requiring radical customization to make them fit into the interior. SPZ provides customers the ability to produce superb, high-quality sound and bass response while utilizing the stock speaker locations in the vehicle.”

The most significant performance change for the two SPZ models, the SPZ60 (6.5-inch woofer) and SPZ50 (5.5-inch woofer), is an increase in maximum peak-to-peak driver excursion of 22mm, nearly one full inch—an astonishing figure for transducers of this size. This translates to a significant increase in bass extension and dynamic potential, such that the SPZ50 and SPZ60 deliver the performance of much larger speakers even while retaining the ability for “drop-in” installation using factory locations in a wide variety of vehicles.

With Boston’s newly optimized, patented AMD™ system, both models utilize an improved version of the Z-Series’ Type-M1 1-inch anodized alloy dome tweeter with 360° rotational tweeter plane, which allows the owner to tune the soundstage from OEM speaker locations.

Retained from the earlier Z-Series are Boston’s superbly high strength-to-weight, long-strand carbon-fiber woofer material for superb transient response and detail; TwinStage™ heatsinks, which maintain the low voice-coil temperatures essential to high-volume, low-distortion playback; and cast-aluminum woofer baskets with RadialVent™ cooling for improved strength, heat dissipation, and air flow. The SPZ Series also uses system-specific crossovers, housed in aluminum cases that pull heat away from the internal components to increase power handling. The crossovers feature 24dB/octave filters and unique equalization settings that deliver optimized sound performance in both infinite-baffle and reduced-volume enclosures.

Of course, the SPZ models also continue to feature all the installation flexibility of their predecessors, thanks to Boston’s VariMount™—a selection of mounting adapters that allow the SPZ models to fit the most common factory speaker locations without radical modification: among others, 165mm and 5×7-inch locations (SPZ60), and 130mm DIN cutouts (SPZ50). Additionally, each model features a removable axis-mount that allows its tweeter and woofer to be installed together in a single speaker location, or separately in a true component-style layout using flush, surface, or angle mounting.
